Curriculum
At Northeast Elementary, students engage in rigorous, meaningful learning designed to build strong academic foundations while encouraging curiosity, critical thinking and problem-solving.
Our curriculum is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards and supported by high-quality instructional resources. Teachers use student data, collaboration and differentiated instruction to meet students where they are and provide appropriate support and challenge.
Literacy
Northeast uses Benchmark Workshop as our core literacy resource. Benchmark is standards-aligned and informed by research in the science of reading, helping students build skills in reading, writing, vocabulary and communication.
Literacy instruction includes opportunities for students to:
- Develop reading comprehension and fluency
- Build vocabulary and background knowledge
- Strengthen foundational reading and phonics skills
- Explore different genres and types of texts
- Develop their voice and skills as writers
- Discuss, analyze and respond to what they read
Teachers use whole-group, small-group and individualized instruction to respond to students' strengths and learning needs.
Mathematics
Northeast uses enVision Mathematics to help students develop both strong mathematical skills and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Students are encouraged to do more than memorize procedures. Through problem-solving, visual models, discussion and real-world applications, they learn to explain their thinking, consider different strategies and make connections among mathematical ideas.
Science & Social Studies
The Colorado Academic Standards provide the foundation for science and social studies instruction at Northeast.
Through our inquiry-based approach, students are encouraged to ask questions, investigate ideas, make connections and apply what they learn.
In science, students engage in hands-on investigations and develop an understanding of concepts in earth, life and physical science.
In social studies, students explore history, geography, civics and economics while developing skills such as global awareness, financial literacy, civic responsibility and systems thinking.
Across both subjects, learning builds from grade to grade and provides opportunities for students to think deeply about themselves, their communities and the world around them.
Assessment & Student Growth
Assessment is an important part of the learning process at Northeast. Rather than relying on a single measure, teachers use multiple sources of information to understand student progress and make instructional decisions.
These may include:
- Classroom assessments
- Student work and performance tasks
- Inquiry-based learning experiences
- i-Ready assessments and progress monitoring
- Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS)
i-Ready
i-Ready is one component of Northeast's balanced assessment approach. Its adaptive reading and mathematics diagnostic helps teachers identify individual student strengths and areas for growth.
Teachers use this information alongside classroom performance and other measures to differentiate instruction, address learning gaps and provide additional challenge when students are ready.
